The recent presentation that inspired your post was titled "CouchDB + Ruby: Perform Like a Pr0n Star". It was accepted under that title by the people who ran the conference. So it seems that in this case at least your suggestion of "If in doubt, why not run your presentation prior to the conference via the organisers" would not work.
Perhaps a better idea in terms of reviewing presentations would be for conference organisers when they receive an offer of a talk with "pr0n" in the title to have a long chat with the prospective speaker about the precise contents of the talk. It seems that including the word "pr0n" in the title should be expected to alert the conference organisers to the possible content. If they take no action then they have some culpability.
Yes I was aware of the title of the presentation.
By title alone, they may have made some references, yet it may not have spiralled out of control to the extent that it did. Graphic images throughout the presentation (and likely copyrighted -- but that's another issue), is really what the main concern here was. But I agree -- removing all references of pr0n would have been the preferrred method. Yes, the conference organisers in this instance must have been aware of the potential for controversy with the title of the paper. As such they hold some of the responsibility of what followed. |
