I'm a "one-eyed Linux zealot" too, and even I found Zemlin's statements a bit bold. I don't have very much experience with SunOS or Solaris, but I retain a bit of awe for it because I know it kicks ass. Hah.
Thanks for the article.
I'm glad I read your article, when I originally read about this dust-up I was pretty confused as to why someone from the Open Source community would behave like such an ass.
While I agree that Linux and Open Source need to in some way make their way into what people might call the 'mainstream', ie. create the perception that Linux is friendly to the business community, I think that situations like this are inevitable as a result. As the article points out, Zemlin is a suit, one more comfortable with the hyperbole of marketing than with the technical reality of software development. Zemlin's statements are clearly self-serving. So....this leads back to the original and unresolved question: can something like Open Source function peacefully within a system that is based on monopoly and domination, the system that Zemlin is speaking to (We win!! You lose!!)? Do we need to completely rethink the way we approach software development, and utterly abandon the competitive, isolated model for a totally cooperative and non-adversarial model? Perhaps competition is not the best mode for software development, and more than it is for scientific research... Somebody ask ESR!
Jim Zemlin has proven before now that is he is ignorant and not very sensible, when he
declared not long ago that GNU/Linux users and organization need to respect Microsoft. My parents, teachers and mentors have always taught me that respect is earned, and when someone like Zemlin tells me what my posture towards Microsoft should be - praising and respectful, he immediately made my list of idiots. The future is Linux and Windows, and possibly Mac in there too. You're just deluding yourself if you think that Vista will mean that MS folds up overnight.
You've missed the point. Yes, in other ways Sun are pro open source. But OpenSolaris is a joke. It's not going anywhere. Finally, why are you a shareholder in a company led by a man with a ponytail? Can anyone take him seriously? ...MLP.
Actually, I am not a Sun MicroSystems shareholder.
I'm just a tech that has used both Linux and commercial UNIXes for well over a decade.
I'm intrigued. In what way is OpenSolaris "not going anywhere"?
WTF?
OpenSolaris or Solaris, already dead! Sun is fishing. Can someone show me a single link to sample DTrace scripts written by community other than Sun MF. Sun had to make it GPL not F.... CDDL. Who likes to write software F.... company ??
Sample DTrace scripts.... I found many --you didn't look far.
I just Googled 'Dtrace script' and got a bunch of non-Sun generated scripts. Here's a sample: Brendan Gregg's DTrace webpage. Contains hundreds of DTrace scripts and utilities. Top 10 DTrace Scripts. A 'Letterman' Style posting from a user. PostgreSQL Docs on using DTrace on their database. Happy DScript hunting.
So, Tukshan, other than the fact that the CDDL is incompatible with the GPL, can you explain to me the various merits of the GPL (or perhaps the downfalls of the CDDL) that would make it a better choice for OpenSolaris?
