Hi Matt,
Nice article. I was planning to write a similar article.. you beat me to it! Have you tried using the "commercial Auto-flag" feature of mythtv to get rid of the commercials? Does avidemux do a better job? I have been recording all the IPL matches as well but not in HD format. Each match takes up around 8GB but after transcoding it becomes 3.8GB in size. I will soon run out of space cheers, Jeffery
Hi Jeffery,
I have used the commercial Auto-flag feature, though in Australia it's a little hit-miss. It works well on some channels, but not all. I find it often overruns at the end of a commercial -- so you miss the 'next segment' of the show. As such I find the extra time it takes for using avidemux makes a big difference. I can cut not only the commercials out flawlessly, but also I remove all the lead-up commentary (I really want to watch the match -- not little to former players in a TV booth in Melbourne or Sydney!). AviDemux has a nice next/prev black frame, which puts you right where the commercials are. Using cut marks it's a simple matter of setting 'A' then 'B' and then hitting Edit->Cut. There you go! No longer a commercial or silly commentators! I planned for the IPL - I purchased 2 x 1TB disks a month ago. Good luck with the games, I really only record HD so I get the best quality and then can transcode down. I also get a 'better reception' on HD than SD here (go figure). Though using SD and transcoding in theory should give the same results. Best Wishes and enjoy the cricket! Matt. PS: It is indeed good (if not a little weird) to see Indian and Australian cricketers working well side-by-side. Hopefully the good will seen in IPL moves across to the International arena.
Hi again,
Great, I will give avidemux a try. Looks like it speeds up the post processing work for you very well. I am enjoying the IPl so far. It was funny to watch Ponting run up to Ishant Sharma during the match and share tips/hugs. I heard that the IPL Commissioner has bigger plans... to run something in a more International scale...... Team Sydney playing Team London and so on. cheers, Jeffery
Yeah avidemux does a fantastic job. Well worth looking into it.
Awesome Team London playing against Team Melbourne, Team Bangalore and Team Christchurch. Now that would be awesome! Hopefully each team can also 'purchase players' so it's a truly international team... much like we have in the English premier league. |
