hmm.. dumped openSUSE because of 10.1 package management had problems?
Agree package management is superior in ubuntu, but the general feel of the OS is much better on openSUSE and with version 11 just around the corner, the package management is just about the same,
I like the feel of a deb based distro over that of an rpm one on a desktop.
For servers, I still use rpm based systems, but they are quite a bit more stable and not upgraded as often (thus I've settled on CentOS for server deployments, and Ubuntu for Desktop deployments). It's a nice combo and seems to work well for me. OpenSuSE lost me on the 10.1 release. 9.3 was awesome, 10.0 was reasonable, but 10.1 just was awful. I moved to Ubuntu and haven't looked back. I even run Ubuntu as my MythTV setup. Again, personal preference only, and YMMV.

Is it because it is a debian derivative? Most of the people who I know and runs ubuntu, do it only for the coolness factor. Some even claim to be "debian" developers by being amongst a certain group of people. To top it all they don't even run debain anywhere (desktop or server). With debian based derivatives, though I like the package management, I dislike the process of creating packages. RPM is just a simple spec file and you are done. My path to openSUSE has been: RedHat > Mandrake/Mandriva -> OpenSUSE Not that I haven't tried switching, I tried desperately to switch to ubuntu (for my mythbox/Desktop) but on the condition that everything works on first install. Unfortunately it didn't and I went back to openSUSE
hehehe... that's the same reason I moved away from openSUSE!
I can create both RPM or Debian packages, so it's not an issue for me. For me... Debian based systems upgrade much easier: 'apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade; apt-get dist-upgrade'. Try that with an RPM system. Also it seems I upgrade my desktop much more often then my servers. Hence debian distros help.

Don't worry openSUSE has that taken care of already BTW what WM do you use? Do you run Mythtv from svn ?
Nah, too late for me on openSUSE. I use SLES in my day job, so I'm pretty familiar with it.
WM = Gnome MythTV = Not svn but what ships with Ubuntu Distro: Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) |

I've previously blogged about building a new house. It's taken quite some time, and a change of builder but it appears we're finally going to actually start the building process now. We met with our builder yesterday who has informed us that our

I have previously mentioned we're building a new house (both here and here). Well on Tuesday the building commenced! Not much to date, but they have done the site preparation, and will be digging the foundations and hopefully laying the concrete sl
